Fast-paced Tetris-inspired puzzler

Quaterneo is a free puzzle game by the indie developer, rologfos. It utilizes gameplay mechanics from the classic Tetris game while infusing elements from other genres to create a more challenging experience for players with a unique twist. Its neon-inspired game aesthetics also adds to its distinct appeal.

There have been various games that have replicated the experience of Tetris like Tetris Zone and Quinn. Quaterneo follows suit with a similar mechanic to its core gameplay. However, its futuristic feel and art style lend themselves well to make it distinguishable, as well as avoiding being just another copycat/rip-off.

Is Quaterneo any fun to play?

Quaterneo's Tetris inspirations are noticeable as you start your first play session. It has pixel art style and graphics combined with its bright and colorful neon color palette and soundtrack. It's minimal, futuristic, and is a fitting theme overall. Your gameplay will start off with a row of color-coded blocks that need to be rotated in the correct position to form a square of uniform color to remove from the board.

The unique twist comes in the form of null blocks, which will occasionally appear after clearing out a square, bringing some added difficulty and challenge on top of keeping your blocks from piling up too quickly. There are a total of 3 game modes to choose from. There's even an online scoreboard to let you compete with others for the best scores.

Lastly, get to unlock cosmetic upgrades as you play, and they will let you change the look of your blocks with themes and color combinations. For controls, you can opt to use your mouse, keyboard, or controller. Although playthroughs can be relatively short, they are intended to be played that way and be more accessible to casual players.

A unique and atmospheric experience

If you're more of a casual player that enjoys playing game for quick short bursts, Quaterneo should be included in your list of considerations. It features gameplay that you're most likely familiar with, cool pixel graphics, and an atmospheric soundtrack to round out the experience. The game is also available for free, making it even more enticing to try out.
